New Jersey councilmember, Kathy Williams, found herself in a heated exchange with a police officer during a traffic stop in Camden, New Jersey. The incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon, when Officer Eric Barr was conducting a traffic stop on Williams’ vehicle.
According to a recording of the incident, which was obtained by NBC Philadelphia, Williams became agitated as the officer explained that she had been stopped for a traffic violation. The situation escalated when the officer questioned Williams’ address, leading her to claim that she was “literally the boss” of the officer.
“You don’t know who I am, I’m the one who writes your paycheck,” Williams exclaimed. “I am literally your boss, don’t you forget it!”
The confrontation continued, with Williams becoming increasingly combative. “Don’t you ever, ever, ever, question my residency in this city,” she barked, her voice raised. “I was born and raised here, I’m a proud resident of this city, and I’m a councilmember, so don’t you ever, ever, ever, question me about my residency again!”
The officer repeatedly attempted to maintain a professional tone, pointing out that he was simply doing his job. He asked Williams to provide proof of residency, but she refused, arguing that as her boss, she didn’t need to provide any documentation.
The incident has sparked outrage among city residents and officials, with many criticizing Williams’ behavior. It is the latest in a series of controversies surrounding the councilmember, who has faced allegations of misconduct and ethics violations in the past.
As a result of the incident, Camden Mayor Victor Carstarphen has announced plans to review the situation and take any necessary steps to address the matter. “We take very seriously any reports of disrespect towards our law enforcement officers,” Carstarphen said in a statement. “We will be conducting a thorough review of the incident to ensure that all parties involved are held accountable.”
