Free or Not, That Is the Question
The debate has been on for a while now, but the verdict is pending. New Hampshire is infamous for its “Live Free or Die” motto, but has it truly achieved the perfect blend of freedom and regulation? Maybe. Maybe not. A lawsuit over a batch of doughnuts is about to decide the matter.
Robert Anderson, a New Hampshire businessman, is taking the town of Hampton to court over the issue of “free enterprise” vs. municipal control. You see, the town reportedly has been regulating the way doughnuts are made and sold, enforcement of which was carried out via a rather aggressive “doughnut inspector” named Penny. The alleged tyrannical actions of the inspector have riled Anderson, who is fighting back, seeking an end to what he deems “unconstitutional” interference.
Anderson’s legal team has filed a case against the town, claiming that these regulations are an example of the same old tale, where control freaks take comfort in the most trivial and ridiculous domains, under the guise of “safety” and “health.” To prove this claim, Anderson believes that the town is no more progressive than the individual towns that line up to prove a visceral distaste for anything that goes unscripted. Who needs a well-crafted doughnut, exactly? Just another obstructive institutionalism out of control, wrongly exploiting the impression opened among primed souls.
As stated, the fate of New Hampshire as the true embodiment of the ideal of untied providers with thinkers cannot simply rest on one single doughnut. They have a right to see into the matter as if all goosey, cocky, modem-held ergosteroids; but now the Hampton case can be revealed to the public, with consternation.
