During an appearance on Mark Jackson’s podcast, “Come And Talk 2 Me”, Thomas revealed that he had been keeping his diagnosis private, but wanted to share the news with his fans and supporters. He explained that the condition had caused his facial muscles to droop, and that he had been receiving love and prayers from those who had noticed his appearance had changed.

According to the Mayo Clinic, Bell’s palsy can cause a range of symptoms, from mild to severe, including a smile appearing one-sided and difficulty closing the eye on the affected side. The condition can improve over time, and Thomas has spoken publicly about his desire to move forward and focus on his health.

Thomas is not the first NBA player to be diagnosed with Bell’s palsy, with Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid having spoken publicly about his own diagnosis ahead of a playoff series. Despite his diagnosis, Thomas has continued to be involved in the NBA, both as a coach and as a sports personality.

The 62-year-old Thomas had a Hall of Fame playing career with the Detroit Pistons, earning 12 All-Star team nods and being named NBA Finals MVP in 1990. He has also coached at the collegiate and professional levels, leading the Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks during his coaching career.
