During a recent episode of his podcast, three-time NBA champion Dwyane Wade revealed a health scare he experienced over a year ago. Wade had surgery in December 2023 to remove 40% of a kidney, and the procedure was followed by a “shocking” cancer diagnosis.
Wade, 43, initially avoided seeing a doctor for years but made an appointment after experiencing stomach issues, cramps, and trouble urinating. A full body scan later revealed a “cyst/tumor” on one of his kidneys.
Wade recalled the experience, saying he was forced to confront his weakness in front of his family, which was a difficult moment for him. “I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak,” he said. “That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life. … I was struggling, dog. Struggling.”
Wade’s father, Dwyane Wade Sr., also had a battle with prostate cancer, which has given Wade a new appreciation for the importance of family. Despite experiencing the health scare, Wade did not provide details about his current health.
Wade is a retired Miami Heat star, having played in the NBA from 2003 to 2019. He was named NBA Finals MVP in 2006 and holds the Heat’s all-time records for points, assists, and steals. He is also a part-owner of the Utah Jazz and a minority investor in the Chicago Sky of the WNBA.
