NBA legend Dwyane Wade has revealed that he was diagnosed with cancer and had 40% of his kidney removed. The 43-year-old shared his diagnosis on an episode of his podcast, “The Why with Dwyane Wade”.

Wade explained that he was inspired to see a doctor after experiencing issues with his urine flow and stomach pain. He underwent a full-body scan, which revealed a cancerous tumor on his kidney. Despite the shock of the diagnosis, Wade underwent surgery in December 2023 and had 40% of his right kidney removed.

Wade credited his father, who battled prostate cancer, for encouraging him to seek medical attention. He also spoke about the importance of being strong in the face of weakness, saying, “As a man, you never want your family to see you weak, don’t want to be perceived weak, don’t want to be seen in your weakest moments. But I had to. What I saw in the midst of me going through my illness, I saw my family that may not always talk, may not always agree. I saw everybody show up for me and be there for me, and in that process, in my weakness I found strength in my family.”

Wade’s experience has also led him to appreciate the importance of family and the role it plays in one’s life. He concluded, “My own journey to have that surgery, I think it was the first time that my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak. That moment was probably the weakest point I’ve ever felt in my life. But I learned that it’s okay to be weak in front of your family. You can be strong, but you can also be weak, and that’s okay.”
