Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has undergone successful hip replacement surgery after falling and breaking her hip while walking with her congressional delegation in Luxembourg, her office announced on Friday.
According to a statement from Pelosi’s office, the 82-year-old Democrat fell on Wednesday evening while on a trip to Europe to meet with other parliamentary leaders. She was taken to a hospital in Strasbourg, France, for treatment and then transported to a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, for further care.
Pelosi’s office said in a statement, “Pelosi experienced a broken hip and underwent successful surgical intervention, which included a hip replacement. She is currently recovering and is expected to make a full and speedy recovery.”
The injury occurred as Pelosi was on a trip with her congressional delegation to meet with European Union leaders in Brussels. Members of Congress often travel together on trips abroad to meet with foreign leaders, attend international conferences, and engage in diplomatic activities.
Pelosi has been a stalwart of American politics, serving 35 years in the House, including 19 years as the first female Speaker of the House. She is a key figure in US politics, known for her legislative expertise and leadership on a range of issues, including healthcare, tax policy, and social justice.
As she recovers from her surgery, Pelosi is expected to return to her official duties in Washington, D.C., when the House of Representatives is next in session. Her office has not provided a timeline for her return, but it is expected to be in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, Pelosi’s office said, “Pelosi is receiving excellent medical care and is grateful for the support and well wishes from her colleagues, constituents, and the American public.”
