Nancy Pelosi Sustains Injury in Fall During Overseas Trip, Hospitalized for Evaluation
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi suffered an injury on Friday while on an overseas trip in Luxembourg, where she was part of a bipartisan delegation marking the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. According to reports, Pelosi, 84, tripped going down a marble staircase at the Grand Ducal Palace and sustained a fracture to her hip.
She was immediately rushed to the hospital for evaluation and treatment, and her spokesperson, Ian Krager, announced that she is receiving “excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals.” The incident has led to the cancellation of all future events on the trip.
Pelosi’s fall comes just days after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell also suffered an accident, injuring his face and wrist during a GOP lunch on Tuesday. Both incidents have raised concerns about the health risks faced by elderly politicians, particularly those in their 80s.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that falls are a major health risk for seniors, with over 1 million hospitalizations each year. According to the CDC, lower body weakness and difficulties with walking and balance can make falls more likely.
Pelosi is still working despite her injury and is expected to return home to the US soon. The incident has led to congratulations and well wishes from many, including friends and colleagues who have expressed concern for her health and well-being.
