[The Chairman of the World Holocaust Remembrance Center, Yad Vashem, has accused Elon Musk of insulting victims of Nazism after he told a German far-right party to “move beyond” the “guilt” of the past. Musk made the comments in a video address at an election campaign launch for the Alternative for Germany (AfD), where he stated that “children should not be guilty of the sins of their parents, let alone their great-grandparents” and that there is “too much focus on past guilt, and we need to move beyond that.”

Musk’s remarks mirror the AfD’s long-held position that Germany should stop atoning for crimes committed by the Nazis in the past. However, Dani Dayan, the Chairman of Yad Vashem, warns that “the remembrance and acknowledgement of the dark past of the country and its people should be central in shaping the German society, and failing to do so is an insult to the victims of Nazism and a clear danger to the democratic future of Germany.”

Musk’s comments have been met with criticism from various leaders, including Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who called his words “ominous” and “all too familiar.” Musk has also been accused of interfering in European politics, with some leaders saying he is promoting dangerous figures.

Musk has faced scrutiny for his apparent support for the far-right in the past, including his address at the post-inauguration rally for US President Donald Trump, which some commentators said resembled a fascist salute. He has also faced backlash for making Nazi puns and trivializing the Holocaust.

Despite the criticism, Musk has continued to voice his support for populist political movements that have galvanized European elections, drawing parallels between the political climate in Germany and the United States. The global impact of the approaching election could be significant, he emphasized.
