U.S. President Donald Trump Once Again Criticizes EU’s Trade Relationship

Ad

In a virtual address to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, President Donald Trump reiterated his concerns over the EU’s trade practices, claiming they treat the U.S. unfairly. Trump emphasized that the EU imposes significant restrictions on American goods entering the bloc, while its own products continue to flood the U.S. market.

“From the standpoint of America, the EU treats us very, very unfairly, very badly,” Trump said, pointing out the huge trade deficit the U.S. has with the EU in sectors such as machinery and vehicles. He hinted that the U.S. could impose tariffs on EU goods to balance the relationship, saying, “We’re going to do something about it.”

Trump has made similar complaints in the past, including about the EU’s restrictive approval processes for American agricultural products and autos. He claimed that the EU imposes tariffs on American goods, while its own products are exempt.

Despite these threats, many European CEOs hope to avoid a trade war. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said a trade war was not in the interests of the EU or the U.S., as the countries’ economies are highly interconnected. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde urged the EU to be prepared for the possibility of U.S. tariffs, citing Trump’s reluctance to impose them so far.

The U.S. is the EU’s biggest export market, and the U.S. and EU have significant trade relationships in areas such as energy and services. However, Trump’s latest criticism of the EU’s trade practices has put further pressure on the already delicate trade relationship.
