Nerves were High for Georgia Bulldogs as Backup Quarterback Took Over in Thrilling SEC Championship Game Victory
Carson Beck suffered a hand injury in the first half of the SEC Championship game against Texas, forcing backup quarterback Gunner Stockton to take the reins. Despite not having had much meaningful playing time in his career, Stockton rallied the Georgia Bulldogs to a thrilling 22-19 overtime victory over Texas, earning them the SEC title and a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.
Georgia was trailing 6-3 when Beck went down with an injury, and Texas took advantage of the Bulldogs’ misfortune, moving into scoring position. But Stockton, wearing a game face, took the helm and led the Bulldogs on a scoring drive in overtime. Texas was unable to respond, and on a first and goal, Beck returned to the game and handed the ball off to Trevor Etienne, who scored the winning touchdown.
Stockton’s game was a breakout performance, with 12 completed passes for 71 yards and 16 attempts. He was aided by a Georgia defense that held Texas to a field goal in overtime.
The victory marked Georgia’s second win over Texas this season, and sets them up for a possible national championship matchup against the Longhorns. Despite a challenging first half, Stockton and the Bulldogs were able to overcome their setbacks and secure a championship victory.
