A large phase three trial of a potential norovirus vaccine by Moderna is currently underway, with results expected as soon as later this year or 2026. The 25,000-person study is enrolling ahead of schedule, with interest in participation surging possibly due to the increased incidence of norovirus this season.

Norovirus is a highly contagious and seasonal illness, causing vomiting and diarrhea, and is more common in the winter months. This winter has been especially brutal, with twice as many norovirus tests coming back positive in January compared to the same time last year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

There is currently no vaccine for norovirus, which makes immunizing against it a challenge due to the many different types of the virus. Moderna’s vaccine candidate targets the three genotypes that typically cause most infections, using mRNA technology to show the immune system something that looks like norovirus but isn’t infectious, allowing the body to learn how to fight back.

The company’s goal is not to prevent people from getting norovirus entirely, but to make them feel a little less unwell and reduce the need for medical attention if they do contract it. Seniors and healthcare workers are the main target populations, as they are particularly vulnerable to complications from norovirus such as dehydration. The company is also exploring the potential use of the vaccine in people going on cruises, where the virus can spread easily.

Investors are skeptical about whether the vaccine will be commercially viable, with the requirement for further testing in children if the shot works in adults. Moderna has not tested the vaccine in children, but would be obligated to do so if the shot is approved for adults.
