Moana 2 Shatters Records with Record-Breaking Opening Weekend
The new Disney animated movie, Moana 2, has had a record-breaking opening weekend at the box office. The film, which is a sequel to the 2016 hit, has set new records for the most first-day pre-sales of any 2024 animated movie and has broken the record for the highest-grossing Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday day, 3-day Thanksgiving weekend, and 5-day Thanksgiving weekend of all time.
According to Disney, the film is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day gross of $135.5 million and a 5-day total of $221 million at the domestic box office, with a projected $368 million worldwide debut. This impressive opening weekend has also broken records for the biggest 5-day opening weekend of all time, the biggest Thanksgiving debut ever, and the biggest Walt Disney Animation Studios debut of all time.
Moana 2’s success is not limited to its opening weekend, as it is also on track to become the highest-grossing Walt Disney Animation Studios movie of all time. With its global opening weekend projections, it is set to become the company’s 12th highest-grossing movie of all time, beating out the entire worldwide grosses of previous classics including The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Bambi, and Mulan.
While it remains to be seen if the film will beat the record for the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, it has already earned a 65% Rotten Tomatoes score with an audience score of 87%. This suggests that Moana 2 is well on its way to becoming a box office success.
