GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell Trips, Sustains Wrist Injury
Senator Mitch McConnell, the 82-year-old leader of the Senate Republicans, tripped on Tuesday and sustained a wrist injury and a minor cut to the face. The incident is the latest in a series of health issues for McConnell, who has faced several falls and other medical episodes in recent years.
According to his office, McConnell tripped after lunch and sustained the injuries, which have been described as minor. He has been cleared to continue with his schedule. Several senators reported that McConnell, who has a weak leg due to childhood polio, took a fall in the Capitol building. John Thune, the incoming Senate Majority Leader, confirmed that McConnell is “fine” and confirmed that he walked back to his office after the incident.
A medical team entered McConnell’s office shortly after the incident, and an ambulance was parked outside the Capitol. Medics went into the building and left shortly after.
This is not the first time McConnell has fallen. Last year, he was treated for a concussion after a fall at a Washington, D.C. hotel. He has also appeared to briefly freeze up on multiple occasions while speaking to reporters. McConnell is expected to remain in his Senate seat until his term expires in January 2027. When the new Congress begins, Thune will take over as Senate GOP leader.
