Everyone Has a Lucky Number in Las Vegas: Bucks Win NBA Cup
The Milwaukee Bucks emerged victorious in the NBA Cup title game, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder 97-81. Tournament MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo led the way with 26 points, 19 rebounds, and 10 assists, while Damian Lillard added 23 points. The Bucks connected on 17 3-pointers, outscoring the Thunder 51-15 from beyond the arc.
The Bucks, who were led by coach Doc Rivers, have now won the NBA Cup title for the second time in the tournament’s two-year history, joining the Los Angeles Lakers as the only champions. The team has been on a tear, winning 13 of their last 16 games, although the win doesn’t count towards the official regular season record.
The Bucks’ victory came despite playing without guard Khris Middleton, who was out due to a non-COVID illness. The Thunder, who were led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams, struggled to find their rhythm, shooting only 34% from the field and being outscored by 19 points in the second half.
“It’s great, it’s great for our team,” said Antetokounmpo. “We’re getting better. … We know we’re leaving Vegas as a better team. I’m so proud of this group. Man, I’m so proud of this group.”
The Bucks’ victory comes with a cash prize of $514,971 per player, while the Thunder players took home $205,988 each. The win marks the Bucks’ 12th victory in the NBA Cup, improving their all-time record to 12-1. They have won every game they have played in the tournament, including a perfect 7-0 record this season.
