Bill Belichick has left a trail of surprises in the college football world with his recent hire at the University of North Carolina. Another shocking name may be on the horizon for a coaching position, with reports suggesting that Michael Vick is in discussions to become the next head coach of Sacramento State. ESPN reported on Monday that Vick has had talks with the team.
Vick, a former NFL quarterback, previously told The Virginian-Pilot that he has had conversations about the possibility of becoming the head coach at Norfolk State. He also expressed his interest in leading the team, stating, “I know how to lead and I know what it takes.”
However, The Sacramento Bee reported that an unnamed athletic department member disputed the ESPN report, stating that Vick was not a candidate for the head coaching position. Sacramento State President Luke Wood released a statement to ESPN, confirming that Vick had expressed interest in the position and that a meeting had taken place to discuss his interest in the school’s athletic programs.
If accepted, this would be Vick’s first head coaching position since his retirement from the NFL. He previously worked as an NFL analyst for Fox Sports after his playing career. Vick’s path to redemption began after spending nearly two years in prison for his role in a dog-fighting operation. He was later able to rehabilitate his image and played for the Philadelphia Eagles, New York Jets, and Pittsburgh Steelers before retiring in 2015.
