Speaker Mike Johnson sounds alarm on border crisis after New Orleans attack: ‘Dereliction of duty’
House Republican Conference Chair Mike Johnson is sounding the alarm on the border crisis after a recent attack on a congressman’s car in New Orleans, saying it is a direct result of a “dereliction of duty” by the Biden administration.
In a statement Friday, Johnson called the attack on Rep. Clay Higgins, a Marine Corps veteran and member of the Louisiana congressional delegation, a “wake-up call” for lawmakers and Americans alike about the dangers of the current border crisis.
“It’s a stark reminder that our country is in chaos and the radical Left’s open borders policies have created a powder keg of danger and violence,” Johnson said. “The American people are crying out for leadership and action, but all they’re getting from this administration is excuses and incompetence.”
The attack on Higgins’ car, which occurred on Wednesday evening, came after rumors spread on social media that the congressman was driving a car with a magnet attached to it that could have potentially been used to transport drugs or other contraband. The rumors were quickly debunked, but not before a group of men followed Higgins’ car and attempted to assault him.
Johnson said the attack is a result of the Biden administration’s “failure to secure our border and protect our citizens.” He called on President Joe Biden to take immediate action to address the crisis, including building the wall, increasing law enforcement presence and rescinding the executive actions that have led to the influx of new immigrants.
“The American people demand better, and it’s time for the president to start delivering,” Johnson said. “Instead of just making excuses, we need a plan to secure our border, keep our communities safe, and uphold the rule of law.”
