Jack Huston Makes Debut as Feature Film Writer-Director with ‘Day of the Fight’
Jack Huston, a former star of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire,” makes his directorial debut with the indie boxing drama “Day of the Fight,” starring Michael C. Pitt as Irish Mike, a former boxer on the rebound. The film follows Irish Mike as he reunites with important people from his past to correct his past mistakes before his big comeback fight.
The film takes place over the course of a single day, as Irish Mike navigates the streets of Brooklyn, linking up with characters played by Ron Perlman, Joe Pesci, Steve Buscemi, and John Magaro, among others.
Nicolette Robinson co-stars as Jessica, Irish Mike’s estranged partner and mother of their child. The scenes they share are among the film’s most poignant, with Pitt and Robinson’s performances infusing these characters with a sense of reality. The film’s focus on genuine human emotion and empathy towards its characters prevents it from falling into melodrama.
In a ScreenRant interview, Michael C. Pitt and Nicolette Robinson spoke about their work on “Day of the Fight.” They discussed the importance of establishing a human connection while acting, with Pitt sharing his experience training to get in shape for the role and Robinson recalling her past as a Broadway singer and how it influenced her character’s musical sequences.
When asked about their dynamic, Pitt and Robinson highlighted the importance of building a rapport with each other and letting go of their guards. Pitt noted that Robinson’s positive attitude helped him to be more positive as well. Robinson agreed, saying that she saw Jack Huston’s vision for the film and the characters and felt a sense of confidence and trust.
Regarding the film’s black and white aesthetic, Pitt and Robinson felt that it enhanced the overall experience, but for them, the key was to ground the story in reality.
“Day of the Fight” is set to hit theaters on December 6.
