Day of the Fight: Michael C. Pitt & Nicolette Robinson Break Down Their Chemistry in New York City-Set Boxing Drama
In the highly-anticipated boxing drama, Day of the Fight, Michael C. Pitt and Nicolette Robinson star as a troubled boxer and his love interest, respectively. In an exclusive interview, the talented duo opens up about their characters’ on-screen chemistry, the challenges of filming in the gritty world of professional boxing, and the emotional depth of their highly-anticipated movie.
C. Pitt, known for his versatility in films like The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Maps to the Stars, takes on the lead role of boxer Jack Shea. “I think what drew me to this project was the complexity of the character,” he explains. “Jack is a tough guy, but he’s also incredibly vulnerable. He’s trying to reconcile his past and find a way to move forward. It’s a real privilege to play a character like that.”
As for his co-star, Robinson, known for her work on The Glenn Gould and parental book, stars as Emma, a bar owner who becomes entangled in Jack’s world. “Emma is a strong, independent woman who isn’t afraid to stand up for herself,” she says. “She’s also been through her own struggles, which makes her incredibly empathetic. I loved playing her – she’s a true heroine.”
When asked about the on-screen chemistry between their characters, both C. Pitt and Robinson agree that it took time to develop. “We had a great director, [David] Yarimitsu, who pushed us to really explore our characters,” C. Pitt notes. “We had some great conversations about who they were and what they wanted from each other. Once we found that connection, the rest fell into place.”
Robinson adds, “We also had a lot of trust – trust in the story and trust in each other. We knew we were creating something special, and that made it easier to expose ourselves emotionally on camera.”
The film’s gritty, day-in-the-life portrayal of professional boxing was also a challenge, but both actors agree it was a crucial element in bringing the characters to life. “David’s direction was meticulous – he wanted to immerse us in the world of boxing, to make us feel like we were actually there in the ring,” C. Pitt recalls. “It was intense, to say the least, but it was also exhilarating. I loved the physicality of it all – the sweat, the pain, the adrenaline.”
As for the emotional depth of the film, Robinson points to the complex relationships between the characters. “Day of the Fight isn’t just about a man and his rivalries in the ring – it’s about the people surrounding him, and the ways in which their lives intersect,” she notes. “It’s a powerful exploration of what it means to be human, to be struggling, and to find a higher meaning.”
Day of the Fight is a powerful, emotionally charged exploration of the world of professional boxing, and the people who inhabit it. With outstanding performances from C. Pitt and Robinson, it’s a film that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats, craving more.
