New York Mets Owner Steve Cohen Speaks Candidly About Pete Alonso’s Contract Negotiations

In a rare interview, New York Mets owner Steven Cohen spoke frankly about the current state of Pete Alonso’s contract negotiations, declaring that they’re “worse” than the team’s previously arduous talks with superstar Juan Soto. During the Amazin’ Day panel at Citi Field, Cohen revealed that while the Mets have made a “significant offer” to Alonso’s agent, Scott Boras, the negotiations are proving to be a challenge.

Cohen disclosed that the negotiations are “extremely asymmetric against us” due to the current structures being proposed. He hinted that the addition of Soto to the Mets’ roster is making it even more difficult to fit Alonso under the team’s budget. In a show of transparency, the owner admitted to being “exhausted” by the ordeal and stated that he will only continue to entertain offers if there is a reasonable chance of the negotiations concluding satisfactorily.

Despite the negative tone, Stearns reinforced the team’s affection for Alonso, emphasizing the organization’s devotion to the prized first baseman. Meanwhile, Cohen has offered $68-70 million in present-day money for Alonso’s contract, a package that was earlier rejected in favor of a higher deal with delayed payments.

Currently, Alonso, a fan favorite, remains without a deal and is being actively pursued by multiple teams, with the Toronto Blue Jays reportedly one of the clubs in the hunt. As talks continue, one thing is certain: Mets supporters will be waiting anxiously for news of the star player’s future with their beloved team.
