The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has become the most successful franchise of superhero films, but many of its heroes had their feature debut much earlier. Marvel Comics was founded in 1939 under the name Timely Comics, and the company first launched with a comic titled Marvel Comics, which became a regular series for the brand.

In the 1960s, Timely rebranded and officially adopted Marvel as the name of the company, and many of its most popular characters had already been created. While Marvel trailed behind DC Comics, which was already making movies about its characters from the early 1940s, Marvel began to make moves to get its characters on the big screen in a more proactive way in the 1970s and 1980s.

Captain America’s first movie appearance was in 1944, during World War II. The character was created in a Timely Comics publication in 1940, and a serial about the hero was produced by Republic Pictures in 1944. However, the film differed significantly from the comics, featuring a character named Grant Gardner, a District Attorney who secretly fought crime as the vigilante Captain America.

Spider-Man’s first movie appearance was in 1977, with a made-for-television movie starring Nicholas Hammond as the web-slinging hero.

The first movie about Nick Fury, played by David Hasselhoff, was produced in 1998 and received widespread negative criticism, failing to launch a TV series as planned. The film was intended to be a prelude to a TV series, but it did not go as planned and is now largely forgotten. Despite this, Marvel has found success in taking its story adaptations in-house and has paid off in a big way.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has come a long way since its early beginnings, with many characters having their feature debut many years earlier. Despite some missteps along the way, Marvel has continued to grow and evolve, bringing its beloved characters to life on the big and small screens.
