Mayor Eric Adams Warns of Unseen Crisis Among Young People

Mayor Eric Adams took the stage at the New York City Economic Development Corporation’s (NYCEDC) 2022 Annual Breakfast, held at the Sheraton New York Times Square Hotel, to discuss the youth crisis facing the city. He stressed that something was happening beneath the surface, affecting the mental health, education, and overall well-being of young people.

“Last year’s city budget devoted over $2 billion to the social services sector, and yet, we still see our young people struggling,” Adams acknowledged. “It’s not just about throwing more money at the problem. We need a more holistic approach to addressing the issues at the root of the crisis.”

Adams pointed to various demographics, such as the 44% of young people aged 16-24 who reported having had a depressive episode in the past year, the 37% who struggle with anxiety, and the 21% who experience suicidal thoughts. He emphasized that these numbers increased significantly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent isolation and trauma many young people experienced.

“That’s why we’re investing in youth development programs, mental health resources, and community-based initiatives that can help us reach the most vulnerable populations,” Adams said. “It’s about providing opportunities for our young people to participate, engage, and thrive in their communities.”

Adams proposed an interagency team, comprising representatives from various city agencies such as the Departments of Education, Health, and Homeless Services, to develop a comprehensive plan addressing the youth crisis. He also encouraged both non-governmental organizations and private investors to engage in the new initiative.

The mayor concluded by acknowledging that addressing the youth crisis will require a collective effort and a willingness to listen to and involve young people in the solutions. “We must work together to create more opportunities, support, and resources for our young people, ensuring they can thrive and reach their full potential.”
