Mark Wahlberg and Mel Gibson’s action thriller Flight Risk soars to the top spot at the box office January 24-26.

Flight Risk Debuts on January 24 as a potential no. 1 film

Mark Wahlberg stars in the claustrophobic thriller, directed by Mel Gibson, which also features Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace. The movie’s opening weekend box office projections range from $7 million to $12 million, making it a potential second no. 1 debut of 2025.

Gibson, known for his work on The Passion of the Christ and Braveheart, has a track record of success. Wahlberg has also had a successful career, with a string of no. 1 movies, including Uncharted and Transformers: The Last Knight.

The Flight Risk cast is small but star-studded, with Wahlberg playing a mob hitman masquerading as a pilot and Dockery as a U.S. Marshal. Topher Grace, known for his roles in That ’70s Show and Spider-Man 3, plays an informant who is the target of Wahlberg’s character.

The movie’s success depends on its budget, with a projected opening weekend ranging from $7 to $12 million. If it debuts at no. 1, it would be the second film of 2025 to achieve this, following Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. However, with a Rotten Tomatoes score yet to be released, its success may depend on critical reception.

Other movies debuting on January 24 include a new Steven Soderbergh film, making for a competitive weekend at the box office. Overall, Flight Risk’s success is uncertain, but with its star-studded cast and moderate budget, it has a good chance of breaking even.
