Main Street America is “ready” to support President-elect Donald Trump’s economic agenda, according to a top Republican congressman.
“I think Main Street America is ready to get behind the president-elect’s economic agenda,” said Rep. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee. “I think people are looking for a change, and I think they’re looking for someone who is going to create jobs and grow the economy.”
Stivers, who spoke to CNBC on Tuesday, said that Trump’s plans to cut taxes, reduce regulations and increase infrastructure spending are all “common sense” ideas that will help boost economic growth.
“I think the president-elect has a great plan, and I think people are going to be excited to see it implemented,” Stivers said.
Stivers also praised Trump’s choice of Gary Cohn, a former Goldman Sachs executive, to head the National Economic Council.
“I think Gary Cohn is a great pick,” Stivers said. “He’s a smart guy, he’s a businessman, and he’s going to be able to help the president-elect make some tough decisions.”
Stivers’ comments come as Trump prepares to take office and implement his economic agenda. The president-elect has promised to create jobs, reduce the national debt and increase economic growth, and has said that he will do so through a combination of tax cuts, regulatory relief and increased infrastructure spending.
Stivers, who has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s candidacy, said that he believes the president-elect’s economic agenda will be a major driver of growth and job creation.
“I think the president-elect’s economic agenda is going to be a huge driver of growth and job creation,” Stivers said. “I think it’s going to be a big difference-maker for Main Street America.”
