French President Emmanuel Macron’s popularity has dropped to a new low since his first election in 2017, a recent poll has shown. According to the Ifop poll published in the Journal de Dimanche newspaper, just 21% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the president.
Macron’s popularity has sunk even lower than it did during the 2019 standoff with the “yellow vests” movement, which saw weekly anti-Macron protests that lasted over a year. While 21% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the president, 79% expressed dissatisfaction, with 44% saying they are “greatly dissatisfied”.
Notably, Macron’s popularity has also dropped significantly among older people and pensioners, who were previously a key source of support for the president. The poll found that 10% more people in these demographics now express dissatisfaction with Macron, a trend that is considered alarming.
The poll’s findings come as Macron faces a political crisis in France, following the dissolution of parliament in the summer and the resulting inconclusive parliamentary elections. The poll was conducted online with 2,001 people aged 18 and over between January 15 and 23.
