Luigi Mangione, Accused of Killing UnitedHealthcare CEO, Is Held in Solitary Confinement
Luigi Mangione, 26, is being held without bail in a maximum-security prison in Pennsylvania, where he is confined to a small cell and has taken every meal alone, officials have revealed. Mangione is being held on gun and forgery charges in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, who was gunned down on December 4 near the New York Hilton Midtown in New York City.
In an interview with Newsweek, Maria Bivens, a spokesperson for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, described Mangione’s cell as 15 feet by six feet with concrete walls, a bed, sink, toilet, and desk with a seat. The cell has a window that provides natural light, but Mangione is not interacting with other inmates at this time. He takes every meal in his cell and has not been given access to a television.
Mangione is fighting efforts to extradite him to New York, where prosecutors have filed second-degree murder and other charges. His lawyer, Thomas Dickey, has said he has yet to see evidence linking his client to the crime and has urged the public not to “rush to judgment” in the case.
According to investigators, Mangione was found with a “ghost gun” that matched shell casing found at the scene of the shooting, and his fingerprints were matched to a water bottle and protein bar wrapper found near the scene. Police also found a handwritten note in Mangione’s possession that referred to “parasites” and expressed his disdain for the U.S. healthcare system.
The note, which was described as “brutal honesty,” condemned corporations that “continue to abuse our country for immense profit” and stated that Mangione is the first to call out the issue with such honesty.
