Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is expected to be arraigned on Monday in New York on state murder and terror charges. The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office confirmed the development, saying it is coordinating with federal authorities for the arraignment.
Mangione faces 11 counts, including one of murder in the first degree and two of murder in the second degree, along with other weapon and forgery charges. He was formally charged with murder through the use of a firearm, two stalking charges, and a firearms offense in a federal criminal complaint unsealed on Thursday.
The suspect was taken into custody on December 9 at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, where he was found with a 3D-printed pistol, a loaded Glock magazine, and a 3D-printed silencer in his backpack. He was also discovered with fake IDs and a three-page “claim” expressing no specific threats but “ill will towards corporate America,” according to the New York City Police Department’s chief detective.
Mangione allegedly planned the murder, which occurred on a busy sidewalk in Midtown Manhattan, and was found to have a notebook with entries detailing his investigation into UnitedHealthcare. He was arrested on an FBI warrant at the scene of the crime.
The shooting has sparked outrage and anger towards the health insurance industry, with some describing it as an act of symbolic retribution for perceived corporate greed. If convicted, Mangione could face the death penalty for the federal murder charge, while the state charges carry a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
