Edmonton Oilers star Corey Perry scored an unusual goal during a third-period rally against the league-leading Washington Capitals, but it wasn’t without controversy. Perry’s goal was made possible by a pass from center Leon Draisaitl, but it allegedly had some outside help from a fan in the stands, who threw a platter of nachos onto the ice.
Washington Capitals goalie Logan Thompson was left frustrated, claiming that something had been thrown onto the ice before the pass was made. A replay showed Perry skating by the concession stand, which was located near the boards, before scoring the goal. Thompson admitted that he should have played until the whistle blows and was left with no choice but to admit defeat.
Despite the controversy, the Capitals were able to hold on to their lead, winning 3-2 and extending their win streak to five games. The Oilers have now lost two consecutive games, their first since star forward Connor McDavid was suspended for three games for cross-checking.
Capitals coach Spencer Carbery joked about the incident, saying, “That’s a first. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a nachos-on-the-ice NHL game. Did they save them? Maybe we can bring them into the locker room.” The real winner of the play, however, may be the fan who threw the nachos, as Jackets defenseman John Carlson joked, “Wasn’t too happy. But credit to him. He got them a goal.”
