LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne and her boyfriend, Pittsburgh Pirates star Paul Skenes, appeared to celebrate New Year’s Eve with friends in New Orleans, unaware of the horrific terror attack that would unfold mere hours later. Dunne posted several images on her social media account, showcasing the couple’s night out with friends, including Pirates prospect Bubba Chandler and his girlfriend.
The happy celebrations took place on Bourbon Street, which would later become a scene of unspeakable tragedy. A pickup truck driven by 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar barreled into a crowd, killing at least 14 people and injuring two dozen more. An ISIS flag was found in the truck, leading authorities to believe the attack was an act of terrorism.
Law enforcement officials, including the FBI, are still investigating the motivations behind the attack, which remains the deadliest New Year’s Day event in modern U.S. history. No other suspects were involved, officials clarified, suggesting that Jabbar acted alone.
