The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is investigating the scene of a school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin. An agency spokesperson told CNN that the ATF is conducting a trace on the firearm used in the shooting. The trace aims to determine where the gun originated, a key part of the investigation.
According to CNN correspondent Josh Campbell, learning the origin of the weapon is crucial because it allows authorities to hold the weapon’s owner accountable. In past shootings, owners of weapons have been held responsible when someone underage uses the gun to commit a violent act.
Police have identified the suspected shooter as a student at Abundant Life Christian School. The suspect was found dead inside the building, according to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes.
