Live updates: Los Angeles wildfires devastate homes as state of emergency is declared

Wildfires Rage Across Los Angeles County, Forcing Evacuations and Destroying Homes

A devastating wildfire in the Palisades area of Los Angeles has spread rapidly, burning through five football fields per minute and forcing tens of thousands of people to evacuate. The fire, which started suddenly and with little warning, has destroyed homes and buildings, including a beloved seafood restaurant in Malibu.

The fire is just one of three burning in Los Angeles County, with the Hurst fire in San Fernando and the Eaton fire in Altadena also causing chaos and destruction. At a Pasadena elderly care home, workers had to quickly evacuate dozens of residents, many of whom were wearing only thin gowns and socks.

Firefighters are facing extreme conditions, with wind gusts reaching nearly 100mph and making it difficult to contain the fires. One firefighter has been seriously injured, and over 1,400 firefighters have been deployed to battle the blazes.

Power outages have affected more than 200,000 homes and buildings, and schools have been closed. Five schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District will be closed on Wednesday, with classes moving online.

The fire department has warned that it may not be possible to contain the fires tonight, and that firefighters are focused on saving lives instead. Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell has advised residents to abandon vehicles and move them to the side of the road to allow emergency vehicles to pass.

The Palisades Charter High School, a renowned film location, and a nearby elementary school have been engulfed in flames. California Governor Gavin Newsom has deployed hundreds of personnel to respond to the disaster, using a range of equipment including airplanes, helicopters, bulldozers, and water tenders.
