Thousands of People Gather in Israel as Ceasefire Deal with Hamas Awaits
Thousands of people gathered on streets across Israel on the eve of a ceasefire deal with Hamas, eagerly awaiting the return of hostages who have been held captive for the past 15 months in Gaza. In Tel Aviv, a massive rally was held in “Hostages Square,” where families of the captives have been holding rallies for over a year, demanding the government negotiate the release of all hostages.
Former hostage Luis Har, who was held captive in Gaza for four months, expressed his concern for the well-being of those still trapped by Hamas. “I’m thinking about in what state they will be,” he said. “They will return in a really difficult state. I hope we can give them all the love and all this embrace. It’s not just a physical hug, it’s the embrace of being with them and understanding them so that they can get used to their new life.”
As part of the ceasefire deal, 33 Israeli hostages are expected to be released in the first phase, but it remains unclear if all of them are still alive. Hamas and its allies still hold 94 of the 251 people taken from the October 7 attack on southern Israel, with at least 34 of them reportedly dead, although the true number is expected to be higher.
In Tel Aviv and across Israel, anti-government protesters also gathered, demanding an end to the war and calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. “We want them back alive, not in coffins,” a crowd chanted as they marched. Einav Zangauker, whose son is held captive by Hamas, called on the nation to ensure the government does not “blow up this deal.”
The “Pink Front,” a group of young artists and performers, led the chants with drums, demanding a comprehensive deal to bring back all hostages. As the nation anticipates the return of the hostages, the tide of patriotism and hope fills the air, with many united in their desire for their loved ones to come home safely.
