Lion’s Key Weapon Expected to Return for 1st Playoff Game

Knuckles and Sonic Pair Up for NFL Playoffs

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell announced on Tuesday that running back David Montgomery is expected to be available for the team’s divisional round playoff game. Montgomery suffered an MCL injury in Week 15, but he sought out different opinions from doctors and has been rehabbing his knee to be available for the playoffs.

Montgomery’s return is a huge development for the Lions, who have been ravaged by injuries all season long. He will likely pair up with running back Jahmyr Gibbs, who has been thriving with the heavier workload. Gibbs has tallied three straight 100-plus rushing yard games and has totaled 365 yards on the ground on 64 carries.

The Lions’ offense has benefited from using both Montgomery and Gibbs this season, with Montgomery owning 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, and Gibbs totaling 365 yards on the ground and 122 receiving yards. The team’s offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson, has been able to use both running backs to get the job done no matter the down and distance.

The Lions will host the lowest seed of wild-card round winners, which could be the Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Commanders, or Green Bay Packers. Despite being without key players, including star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions will take all the healthy players they can get, especially one who has had such an offensive impact.
