Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Times Square for the ball drop despite heavy rain, as four major U.S. landmarks – the U.S. Capitol Building, the Washington Monument in Washington D.C., the One World Trade Center, and the Empire State Building in New York City – were allegedly struck by lightning on New Year’s Eve.

Some Trump supporters believe the lightning strikes were a divine message, sharing videos and images on social media. Christian Ziegler, a Trump supporter and former Republican National Convention delegate, posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the Capitol Building was “struck by lightning as we close out 2024 and head into 2025. God is sending us a message.” The post received over 440,000 views.

Others, including Utah Senator Mike Lee, acknowledged that the lightning strikes felt like an “omen” and wondered what God might be trying to tell them. The Sovereign Brah X account, which has 170,000 followers, shared a video of the lightning strikes and wrote, “Feels like an omen. I wonder what God is telling us.”

However, not everyone was convinced. CBS News congressional correspondent Scott MacFarlane shared a video of lightning in Washington D.C. and said, “Wow, not sure if this is a metaphor of some sort. Lightning appears to have struck the Washington Monument tonight.”

As Trump prepares to be inaugurated for his second term as president on January 20, his supporters will be watching anxiously to see if he delivers on his campaign promises to implement radical change, including mass deportation, drilling for fossil fuels, and an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.
