Liberal Media Figures Defend President Biden’s Decision to Pardon Son Hunter
In the wake of President Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter, liberal media figures have largely come out in support of the move. Despite President Biden’s earlier statement that he would not use the presidential office to benefit his own family, many liberal commentators have justified his reversal, labeling criticisms as “hypocritical” and “bad faith” attacks.
Several liberal commentators took to social media to defend Biden’s decision, with some even going so far as to attack those who were critical of it. Wajahat Ali wrote, “Please spare me all hypocritical outrage over Hunter Biden’s pardon. The same movement that supports and celebrates a criminal vulgarian insurrection now feigns outrage.” David Corn added, “We’re not accepting complaints about the Hunter Biden pardon unless you also complained about the Steve Bannon, Michael Flynn, Roger Stone, and Paul Manafort pardons.”
MSNBC host Katie Phang argued that Hunter Biden’s criminal cases were “politicized” and “unprecedented charges” brought by the Trump administration, while liberal analyst Joyce Vance defended the president’s use of the pardon power, stating that it is an “ability that many presidents have exercised at the end of their term.” Former CNN host Don Lemon also supported the decision, saying, “Of course he’s going to pardon his kid. Don’t be so holier than thou. This is about being a parent.”
However, not all liberal commentators were in favor of the pardon, with some criticizing Biden for going back on his earlier promise. George Conway wrote, “The pardon is understandable—but nonetheless objectionable. If Joe Biden was planning to pardon Hunter, he shouldn’t have said that he would not pardon Hunter.” Judd Legum also expressed regret, stating, “Hunter Biden broke the law. Hunter Biden traded on his last name to make money. Hunter Biden’s actions were exploited and wildly exaggerated by unscrupulous Republicans in an effort to damage his father.”
