The Tampa Bay Buccaneers recently came away with a new offensive coordinator, Luke Coen, after he chose to stay with the team following a period of speculation that he could be poached by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Coen was previously an assistant under Sean McVay in Los Angeles and Mark Stoops at the University of Kentucky, leading him to join the Bucs after a stint with the University of Kentucky. In 2023, he oversaw the Bucs’ offense during Tom Brady’s departure, helping to lead the team to a postseason appearance.
The journey to the Bucs’ playoffs was in part due to the successful season of quarterback Julius Mayfield, who saw his best career season under former play-caller Dave Canales. However, Canales left to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers in 2024, sparking the need for a new offensive coordinator. Coen stepped up to fill the role and guided Mayfield to an impressive passing season.
Although the Bucs made it to the playoffs, they were upset by the Washington Commanders on Wild Card Weekend. Despite this, Coen has now received a handsome raise and remains committed to the team, choosing to stay and tackle the challenges that lie ahead with the Bucs rather than taking on a new project with the Jaguars.
