Buccaneers’ Quarterback Coach Jeremy Spielman on the Hot Seat for 2023 Season
With the departure of General Manager Jason Baalke, questions surrounding the future of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been raised. However, newly warmed interest in head coach Mike Coen’s role has created a new buzz around the team. Initially, Coen was considered a long shot for the job, but with Baalke out of the picture, he now seems a more viable option.
Coen’s impressive 2024 season, where he led the team to a top-four finish in total yards, passing yards, and rushing yards per game, has made him an attractive candidate. The Buccaneers’ offense flourished under his guidance, as quarterback Baker Mayfield broke his career-high marks in passing yards (4,500) and passing touchdowns (41).
Despite being coached by a defensive-minded team led by Todd Bowles, the Buccaneers transformed into an offensive powerhouse in 2024, courtesy of Coen’s skill in extracting the most from his players. Mayfield achieved success without his top two targets, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, and when Evans returned, the duo led the team to another NFC South title, with Evans setting the 1,000-yard receiving mark on the final play of the regular season.
Coen comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree, having previously worked under McVay in Los Angeles before moving to Kentucky and the Buccaneers. He replaced Dave Canales as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2024, leading Mayfield to surpass his previous records set under Canales.
Now, Coen appears poised for a potential promotion, leaving Florida to take on a new role, much like fellow assistant coach Dave Canales.
