September 5 Interview: Leonie Benesch & John Magaro Learned About The 1972 Munich Olympics
In an exclusive conversation, we spoke with German actress Leonie Benesch and American actor John Magaro about their latest collaboration, “Munich: The Edge of War,” a film that revolves around the 1972 Munich Olympics. The dynamic duo shared their experiences filming the movie, which recreates the pivotal moments that unfolded during the Olympic Games.
Benesch and Magaro delved into the meticulous research they underwent to accurately portray the pivotal event. They discussed their preparation, including studying actual footage from the Olympics and immersing themselves in the era’s atmosphere to grasp the significance of this event.
Both actors discussed their characters, with Magaro portraying Ian Hunter, a US athlete who competes at the Olympics, and Benesch playing a German college student who finds herself involved in the events that follow the terrorist attack. Discussing the challenges of shooting on location in Germany and England, Magaro said, “We were based in Munich for a big chunk of the shoot. We were shooting in an old Olympic stadium, so that was amazing to step into that space and pretend that it was 1972.” Benesch corroborated, stating, “The atmosphere was very concentrated and intense. We didn’t have a lot of time to relax, so it was all about pushing forward and giving it everything we had.”
When reflecting on the impact of their roles, both actors concurred that “Munich: The Edge of War” is a tribute to the victims of the Munich Olympics. Benesch concluded, “It’s an important reminder of how we can all be hurt by the actions of a few, and how that hurt can linger for decades.”
Magaro echoed similar sentiments, stating, “This film is a love letter to the people who were affected by the tragic events of 1972.
