Tom McVie, a veteran NHL coach, has died at the age of 89. McVie, who coached 641 regular-season games in his NHL career, spent 11 seasons behind the bench with the Chicago Black Hawks, New York Islanders, and Boston Bruins. He posted a record of 285-214-77, with five playoff appearances and one Stanley Cup final appearance.
Born on October 10, 1932, in Kilsyth, Scotland, McVie played minor league hockey in the 1950s before transitioning to coaching. He began his coaching career in the minor leagues, then worked his way up to the NHL, serving as an assistant coach with the Minnesota North Stars and California Golden Seals before becoming a head coach.
McVie’s most successful season as a head coach came in 1979-80, when he led the Islanders to a 47-15-20 record and the Patrick Division title. He also coached the Bruins in the 1985 Stanley Cup playoffs, where they lost to the Montreal Canadiens in the Adams Division finals.
Throughout his coaching career, McVie was known for his strong defensive systems and ability to develop young players. He was also respected for his leadership and strong work ethic, earning the respect of his players and peers.
After his coaching career, McVie worked as a scout and consultant for various teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins. He was inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and received the Hockey Canada Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
McVie is survived by his wife, Janice, and three children, Chris, Paul, and Karen. Arrangements are pending.
