Lawmakers are demanding answers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) after the deadly shooting that occurred at the National Night Out event in New Orleans.
Representatives Mike Thompson and Chris Stewart, the leaders of the Bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, wrote to FBI Director Christopher Wray requesting a briefing on the agency’s role in investigating and responding to the attack, which left one officer and three others dead.
In the letter, the lawmakers questioned why the FBI was not aware of any “specific threat” or “active shooter situation” at the event, despite previous reports of violent incidents in the area. They also expressed concerns about the timing of the attack, which occurred during a busy night with multiple events happening throughout the city.
“We want to understand what was known before and during the incident, what measures were taken to prevent or mitigate the harm, and what actions the FBI took in response,” the letter read.
Additionally, lawmakers are pushing for the FBI to provide information on any communication with local authorities prior to the shooting and to identify any “lessons learned” that can be used to prevent future attacks.
Thompson and Stewart emphasized the need for the FBI to provide transparent and timely answers to these questions, citing the public’s trust in the agency and its critical role in preventing and responding to mass casualty incidents.
“The public expects our federal agencies to take swift and effective action to keep them safe,” the lawmakers said. “As we move forward, we will be keeping a close eye on the FBI’s efforts to identify the motives behind this senseless act of violence and to implement measures to prevent such incidents in the future.”
The letter concludes by emphasizing the need for Congress to work closely with law enforcement agencies, like the FBI, to ensure public safety and hold perpetrators accountable.
In related news, FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Bryan Cabrera held a press conference, where he emphasized that the FBI is committed to finding answers and holding the shooter accountable.
“This senseless act of violence is a reminder of the real danger and unpredictability of crime, and the devastating impact it has on the community,” Cabrera said.
“We are committed to supporting our partners at the NOPD, NOPS, and other local authorities in this investigation, and to working with them to identify and apprehend those responsible.”
Cabrera went on to highlight the importance of the public’s assistance in solving the crime, saying, “We will do everything we can to make sure justice is served, and that those responsible for this tragedy are held accountable.”
