Laugh Out Loud with 10 Unforgettable Period Comedy Films

There aren’t many comedy movies that use historical settings, but they can have a timeless appeal. Historical comedies offer a chance to laugh at the past and deconstruct the lofty pretensions of historical dramas. Unlike period movies, comedies don’t profess to present an accurate depiction of the past, giving them license to go off the rails and use inaccuracy and anachronism as part of the joke.

Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman is a historical comedy that is based on a true story, following a Black police officer who infiltrates the Ku Klux Klan in the 1970s. John David Washington and Adam Driver star in the movie, which is a buddy cop film with a caper atmosphere. The film uses the true story to underscore the persistence of racial hatred in American society.

Another historical comedy is Bullets Over Broadway, set in the 1920s and following a struggling writer who casts a mobster’s girlfriend in his play to secure funding. The movie uses the intensity of the gangster genre as a backdrop for the main character’s crisis of confidence. It pays tribute to the art of theater, highlighting the rehearsals, rewrites, and insecurity that come with putting on a show.

The Coen brothers’ O Brother, Where Art Thou? is a southern tale set in 1937, taking in cultural tropes of the time such as chain gangs, old folk music, and a Klan rally. The movie is inspired by The Odyssey, but the Coen brothers take a loose interpretation of the story, infusing it with mythical elements that lend 1930s Missouri a mysterious quality. While not historically accurate, the movie’s portrayal of the past rings true in its representation of the unknown and the mysterious.
