Last-play push for victory

K.C. Builds on 20-6 Lead, Overcomes Late Comeback Bid from Panthers

In a thrilling road win, the Chiefs built a 20-6 lead over the struggling Panthers, only to see Bryce Young lead a furious comeback to tie the game at 27 with 1:46 remaining. However, Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes calmly led his team into scoring range, converting a crucial third-and-2 pass to DeAndre Hopkins before scrambling 33 yards to set up a game-winning field goal attempt.

Despite not being the most dynamic runner, Mahomes is known for his ability to make plays with his legs in crucial moments, and he did so again to secure the win. “It’s not like I pre-plan that stuff,” Mahomes said. “It’s just whenever it comes down to it and you’ve got to make the play, I feel like I try to go out there and make the play, and that’s why I feel like it happens kind of later in games sometimes.”

With the win, Mahomes improved his career record to 59-4 when he has a 14-point lead in a game, including playoffs. His last loss in this situation came in the 2021 AFC Championship Game against the Bengals. Mahomes’ ability to make crucial plays with his legs helped his team avoid a collapse against the Panthers, securing another important victory.
