The FBI has rekindled a decades-long manhunt for Josephine Sunshine Overaker, a suspected domestic terrorist accused of setting off a string of arson fires to spread an animal rights message alongside a group of fellow radicals, known as “The Family.”
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department arrested a couple, Dustin Nehl, 31, and Jennifer Nehl, 44, for impersonating firefighters and driving into a restricted zone in a fake firetruck from a fake department.
Overaker, whose exact age is unknown, is believed to have been born between October 1971 and November 1974. The FBI is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to her arrest.
The alleged attacks, which took place in Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado, and Wyoming between 1996 and 2001, were linked to the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front.
Overaker is described as having a large bird tattoo across her back, brown hair, brown eyes, and standing 5 feet 3 inches tall and weighing around 130 pounds. She has facial hair on her upper lip and may be posing as a firefighter, midwife, sheep tender, or masseuse.
The FBI re-shared her wanted poster on the 24th anniversary of her federal indictment, which came in 1998. Overaker is the last remaining fugitive suspect in the 1998 firebombing at the Vail Ski Resort, one of the most devastating ecoterrorism attacks in U.S. history.
Dustin Nehl, one of the arrested couple, has a criminal record that includes prior arson charges, and was found dressed in firefighting gear, carrying radios, and riding with his wife in a decommissioned firetruck purchased at auction. The vehicle was emblazoned with the name of a fake Oregon agency, the “Roaring River Fire Department.”
Overaker faces up to life in prison if convicted. The FBI is urging anyone with information about her whereabouts to come forward.
