LA Galaxy midfielder Riqui Puig will miss the MLS Cup final after suffering a torn ACL in his left knee during the Western Conference final. The injury occurred early in the second half of the Galaxy’s 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders, but surprisingly, Puig was able to contribute to the game by providing the assist on Dejan Joveljic’s go-ahead goal in the 85th minute.
An MRI on Sunday revealed the ACL tear, and it has not been determined yet when Puig will undergo surgery. Despite this setback, the Galaxy will still host the New York Red Bulls in next week’s final.
In his 36 matches across all competitions, including 34 starts, Puig scored 17 goals and provided 20 assists, including four goals and four assists in the Galaxy’s four playoff matches. The midfielder had a strong run in the postseason, and his absence will be felt going into the MLS Cup final.
