Message From Kyiv: You Aren’t Safe — Even at Home
As I write these words, the world is paying attention to the war in Ukraine, with the western media and governments swinging between horror and despair. The news from the front lines is dire: death tolls pile up, hospitals are bombed, and cities are reduced to rubble. But it’s not just the war-torn areas that are in the crosshairs. As I speak, I’m from Kyiv, and I can assure you that every day, every hour, every minute brings uncertainty, danger and fear to our lives.
At the beginning of the war, I used to worry about the nights falling asleep, when the sounds of explosions and gunfire would fill the air. And the days passed like a nightmare, as I crouched in my apartment, listening to the sounds of war. You would often wonder how it could be that after all these years of learning, we, the free world, would find ourselves in a situation where the war raged on. It seemed like we were no further than any other time from the countless wars that preceded us. Just like our grandparents.
