‘I Don’t Think People Understand How Difficult It Is’ – Clay Matthews Defends KC Chiefs’ Back-to-Back Super Bowl Winning Streaks
Kansas City Chiefs haterade is expected to be abundant this year following their third consecutive Super Bowl berth. However, former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews sympathizes with their success, despite being a one-time Super Bowl winner himself.
Matthews spoke to Fox News Digital, recounting his perspective as a competitor and a long-time fan: "I grew up in an era where nobody liked the championship teams. For me, growing up in [Kobe’s] era where the Lakers used to win championship after championship and I was never a fan at all. Just because I root for the Dodger, was a huge Braves fan, growing up in baseball, so hated the Yankees forever."
Matthews, who took part in Packers’ Super Bowl XLV campaign, acknowledged it’s tough even for a storied franchise to repeat their feat. "Because of the parade within the league, it is so difficult for a team stay on top as long as certain teams have staying on top within other sports such as the salaries, no real salary cap; it’s incredible how difficult in football it [is] now."
The reigning champions are still one win from becoming the first team to hold three consecutive super bowls. Joining the Brady-led Patriots earlier, the legendary quarterback’s feats are often emulated, he believes, only a few more teams have mastered the art winning the championship titles.
