Kingsbury Eyes Second Chance with the Chicago Bears
Kingsbury, the former head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, is in the running to take over as the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears. This development comes after his stint as a senior offensive analyst at the University of Southern California, where he worked with the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, Caleb Williams, during his second and final season with the Trojans. Under Kingsbury’s guidance, Williams’ completion percentage improved, jumping two percentage points to 68.6, and the quarterback threw 12 fewer touchdowns than in his previous season, despite USC’s 8-5 record.
Kingsbury’s work with Williams caught the eye of the Bears, who selected him first overall in the 2024 NFL Draft. Kingsbury then parlayed his season with USC into a gig with the Washington Commanders, where he worked alongside head coach Dan Quinn and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. The team experienced a strong start, boasting a 7-2 record, but is currently on a three-game losing streak due to turnovers and injuries in the backfield.
As the head coach of the Cardinals, Kingsbury had a mixed record, going 28-37-1 in four years, with only one winning season and one postseason appearance. He was fired after a 4-13 campaign in 2022. The Bears previously interviewed Kingsbury for their offensive coordinator position in the 2024 offseason, but chose to hire Matt Waldron instead. Kingsbury is now a candidate for the same position, and the Bears are expected to look into his availability in the coming weeks. General manager Ryan Poles and his team will consider whether Kingsbury is a better fit for the position this time around.
