Comedies are a rare breed these days, and it’s refreshing to find one that actually works. One of Them Days, directed by Lawrence Lamont and written by Syreeta Singleton, is a throwback buddy comedy that brings back memories of the genre’s heyday. The film follows best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa as they scramble to prevent eviction after Alyssa’s boyfriend squanders their rent money.

The film’s chemistry between Keke Palmer and SZA is undeniable, and their onscreen relationship feels lived-in and deep without needing to be forced. They have playful and sometimes scathing interactions that are rarely forced, and their friendship is at the heart of the movie. The film smartly maintains this heart throughout, making us worry about what will become of them if they don’t get the money and the state of their friendship.

One of Them Days captures the spirit of a buddy comedy while exploring friendship at its core. The film won’t go down as one of the best comedies, but it’s a refreshing change of pace in a movie landscape that seems to focus on almost every other genre besides comedy and romance. The supporting cast is also memorable, with a hilarious turn from Abbott Elementary star Janelle James.

The film’s only major flaws are its one too many subplots and its 2-hour runtime, which could have been trimmed a bit. However, the ending more than makes up for these weaker areas, and the film delivers an overall fun time at the movies. If you’re looking for a lighthearted comedy with a great premise and romance, One of Them Days is a great choice.

One of Them Days is in theaters on January 17, and is rated R for language throughout, sexual material and brief drug use.
