Emilia Pérez Star Karla Sofía Gascón Apologizes for Past Social Media Posts Amid Oscar Nomination
Karla Sofía Gascón, the star of the Netflix film “Emilia Pérez,” has issued an apology for her past social media posts that have caused hurt and offense. Gascón, who is the first openly transgender performer to be nominated for an Academy Award in an acting category, acknowledged the controversy surrounding her past posts and expressed her deep regret for causing pain to those she has offended.
The posts in question, which were shared by journalist Sarah Hagi, included criticisms of Muslims, George Floyd, and the Oscars. In one post, Gascón referred to Floyd as a “drug addict swindler” and questioned whether his death had served to highlight the lack of rights for Black people and the perceived assassinations of police officers. In another post, she criticized the 2021 Academy Awards, describing it as a ceremony for independent and protest films that resembled an “Afro-Korean festival” or a “Black Lives Matter demonstration.”
Gascón also posted about Islam and the Muslim community, stating that Islam was a “hotbed of infection for humanity” that needed to be cured. The posts were translated from Spanish and have sparked widespread outrage and criticism.
In her apology, Gascón acknowledged the pain and suffering she has caused and expressed her commitment to fighting for a better world. She believes that light will always triumph over darkness and is seeking to make amends for her past actions.
