Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country will respond “robustly” if US President Donald Trump follows through with imposing tariffs on Canada, warning that “everything is on the table.”
Trudeau made the comments at a press conference on Tuesday, where he responded to a question about Trump’s decision to impose a 25% tax on goods from Canada and Mexico. The tariffs, which could go into effect as early as February 1, could raise prices for American consumers.
Trudeau also addressed Trump’s executive action to analyze the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA) and consider whether to remain in the agreement. He emphasized that Canada has already taken steps to address concerns about border security, including a $1 billion comprehensive border plan.
The Canadian leader highlighted the importance of the trade relationship between the two countries, noting that Canada is a key source of energy for American manufacturing, businesses, and homes. He argued that the US would be better off investing in Canadian resources, such as steel, aluminum, and reliable and affordable energy, rather than importing from other countries like Russia, China, or Venezuela.
If enacted, the tariffs could have significant implications for American consumers, as US consumers would likely foot a portion of the bill. Retailers are unlikely to fully absorb the added costs, and prices for goods imported from Canada and Mexico could increase.
