EXCLUSIVE: Johnny Damon Still Remembers Meeting Donald Trump, and the Backlash That Followed
Former MLB star Johnny Damon met Donald Trump during his time with the New York Yankees and has remained friends with the former President, despite the backlash he’s faced for his political views. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Damon reflected on their friendship and his unwavering support for Trump.
Damon recalled how Trump invited him to play golf in Mar-a-Lago after he joined the Yankees in 2005, and they became close friends. However, Damon’s decision to endorse Trump in 2016 sparked a significant amount of backlash, with some fans calling him “stupid” and “a traitor” for supporting the then-candidate.
Despite this, Damon stood by his friend, even appearing on “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2015, where Trump fired him in the sixth episode. However, their friendship was put to the test when Trump won the election, and Damon considered a future in politics. He was even appointed to serve on the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition in 2020.
However, that appointment was short-lived, as Damon was arrested in February 2021 for a DUI, claiming he was targeted for his support of Trump. He was charged with resisting arrest and his wife was charged with battery on a law-enforcement officer and resisting arrest with violence.
Damon acknowledges that he made a “stupid” decision that night and has since focused on charity work and raising his kids. Despite the controversy surrounding his choices, Damon remains committed to his friendship with Trump and will continue to support him through thick and thin.
“I’m going to continue to be friends with him,” Damon said. “And I support my friends through the good and the bad, so that’s who I am and that’s who I’m going to continue to be.”
